Jessie Diggins made her first podium ever in her young World Cup career in the City Sprints in Milan, Italy Sunday. Diggins, teaming up with U.S. Ski Team star Kikkan Randall, showed great poise under pressure in her first ever Team Sprint. It was also only the third World Cup start for the 20 year old. She placed 18th Saturday’s individual sprint, her second start. Last week she won 4 of 4 U.S. National Championship events and extended her Conintental Cup domination.
Jessie Diggins states, “It was awesome being here on the World Cup. I came in with no expectations and was just hoping to qualify yesterday (finished 18th). Today was the first time I've been in a team sprint. I asked Kikkan and my other teammates how it worked, what you did in the breaks and trying to learn how my body would feel. In warm-up, Kikkan and I practiced some exchanges. And we talked about tactics like trying to stay at the front but not leading. Everyone helped me prepare! It was a new experience and I fell twice during exchanges when skiers cut in front of me and stepped on my skis. I felt good about my last leg. I really needed to do a solid round with a good takeoff to put us in position. Starting a couple hundred meters to go I just went all out and made a clean exchange. I'm looking forward to going to Estonia this weekend. Randall Extends Sprint Cup Lead
Kikkan Randall also place 2nd in Saturday’s individual sprint and in so doing extended her World Cup Sprint Cup lead. Randall stated, “It was a fantastic atmosphere out there today and it was fun to race. I have taken part in every World Cup. I've been in good shape. We have been training to compete. I would like to take part in all the World Cups. I hope I can keep the red jersey till the end of the season.”
Jason Lamy Chappuis extends NC World Cup lead with two 2nd place finishes.
Racing on his home snow in Chaux-Neuve, France Chappuis repeaded his second place performance from Friday with what is perhaps the closest photo finish in NC history on Saturday. With these two 2nd place finishes Jason Lamy Chappuis keeps the World Cup leaders Red Jersey. Of Saturdays effort Chappuis states, ”It was an incredible race; it was fascinating to the bitter end. It was really close to the end so that was great for the spectators. I’m a little bit disappointed since it was so close, we had a big fight and battle, but it was a great race, I came second and I can’t complain.
